Too Loud a Solitude

Too Loud a Solitude

Too Loud a Solitude is a book I created to document my personal experience during and after the 2022 Shanghai COVID lockdown, as well as to preserve the home COVID tests I collected over those two months. Taking inspiration from the film Too Loud a Solitude and its portrayal of censorship, I named my book after it to depict a different scenario of censorship. The book features an accordion binding, with one side narrating my story and the other displaying all the COVID tests I had to take.

With this work, I aim to offer a lens on life in lockdown amid censorship, while exploring the question of how the subaltern can speak during a pandemic that amplifies the oppressive forces of authoritarianism, classism, ageism, local xenophobia, and ableism.
